The vintagers and artisans were in St Davids, Pembrokeshire on Saturday, selling their wares. There were flowers, vintage clothes, jewellery, vintage textiles, hand crafted cushions and accessories, kitchenalia and shabby chic furniture.

Despite the downpours, we had sunny faces and good times.
Once people get to know that I collect vintage/retro bits and pieces, they very kindly start looking out for items that might be of interest to me. This week I was told about this lovely child's pram from the early 1960s, which was sitting in their shed and probably destined for the bin.

A good scrub will remove most of the grime but I don't intend to do much more than that, as far as renovation goes. The pram will be used as a prop on my vintage/handmade stall. Sorry pram collectors, this item is not for sale.
What a charming idea - Jubilee Rosettes - and not made by and for a large corporation. These rosettes have been created by www.nellie-dean.com for a Jubilee event at a local school and will be given out to children as prizes. The rosettes look so good and I want one, even though I haven't done anything worthy this week.
This time last year at Wonder Wool Wales we had the pleasure of sun and heat. Builth Wells on 28th April 2012 was wet, stormy and very cold. The wool fest is always worth a visit because not only is there so much to see and buy, but it is a good place for independent producers and makers to showcase their products.
The Pembrokeshire Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers had a stall at the show, selling a variety of members' yarns and fibres, plus woven and knitted items. They also demonstrated how a carding drum can be used to obtain combed fleece or "batts" by placing scoured (washed) fleece in to a drum machine. The drum is covered with tiny metal spikes which then comb the fleece as the handle on the drum is turned. The batts produced by this method of carding is then ready for spinning or felting. Hand carders can be used in this process but the drum method speeds up both production and increases quantity. Industrialisation on a small scale for the home producer.
The first vintage fair of the 2012 season was held at the Plas Hyfryd Hotel, Narberth on Saturday. Yes, it poured with rain but our lovely customers squelched along and shopped with us. This time vintage stalls were in the majority but we were grateful for the cupcake sellers coming along too, keeping us sweet and full.

Valmai Davies from Hearts and Cushions was there with her cushions made from Welsh vintage blankets, as were Canvas & Cloth with a selection from their Narberth shop of haberdashery and vintage blankets; Damson and Slate's vintage kitchenalia; Giddy Aunt's 1950s clothes and accessories; the ever popular Edelweiss Antiques with vintage linens, jewellery, toys and books; the charity shop British Red Cross with a massive table full of superb vintage collectables and clothes, plus live music from Easy Tigerz.

New dolls in red and blue

January 2012 was to be spent in creating new knitty stuff for this seasons craft sales. Looking at old Fair Isle patterns inspired me to knit this mini blanket for doll/teddy. The yarn used is Welsh Mountain DK natural brown and quite sturdy, not at all soft, so will stand up to the wear and tear of picnics in the garden.

These dolls are a new and original creation. The limbs have been knitted from soft lambswool, which looks like very fine 2 ply but knits as 4 ply. This time I have used toy stuffing and not sheep's fleece to stuff the dolls.

Doll/teddy needs options, so I have also created blanket, sheet and pillow sets. Some of the yarns used will be more luxurious than others, such as this pink one, where I have used Rowan silk tweed. The sheets and pillows have been sewn from fabric bought from Canvas and Cloth in Narberth - very pretty they are too.

This is just a start for the season - but why did I think I could make all my stock for the year in one month? Didn't happen .....

January ended with a flurry of snow.

The Albany Hall in Haverfordwest was such a lovely venue for the vintage fair yesterday. It was clean and bright in the main hall and the ladies in the kitchen made some fab cake. It was a shame that the fair didn't go on until 4 and had to stop at 2, but I made some lovely new friends and hope to bump in to them again at the Christmas Vintage Fair in November, at Narberth. The very generous Vicky had such wonderful pieces on her stall and I just had to buy the old fashioned crepe paper Christmas garland and bits and bobs of textiles.
This will be on Saturday, 15th October from 10 - 4 and there will be refreshments, bric a brac, local produce, raffle, crafts and a children's activity corner.

Llangolman Church - Michaelmas Fair

We are up to our elbows in fairs this week. Tomorrow there is the Llangolman Church Michaelmas Fair, in aid of raising funds to help keep the church up and running. Not all of us are church-goers, but we feel that it is important to keep our local churches open and available for the community.

Although it is a bit too early to be thinking about C*******s, I have made a few unseasonal items and will be hoping to sell them at the church fair tomorrow.

Narberth has the ever popular Food Festival, which is open on Saturday and Sunday. There is also the Pig Street Craft Fair, where you can buy lovely crafty items and Pembrokshire Pet Pawprints will be selling handmade, natural pet snacks.

Hoopla Yarn

It has always been my intention to learn how to crochet but have ony got as far as buying books and hooks. On Saturday I went to Canvas and Cloth in Narberth, where they were holding a crochet workshop. The plan for the day was to learn how to crochet by making a bag. We were going to use Hoopla Yarn - Canvas & Cloth are stockists - www.canvasandcloth.co.uk.

The yarn is made of recycled selvedge from cotton t-shirts but feels stretchy and firm, so ideal for a bag. There are bright colours and neutral shades, as well as patterned varieties

After 4 hours of intense learner crocheting (with loads of mistakes and help from C), this was my happy result:
Apparently, the hot weather is ending today as rain is coming in from the west. This means I can stop being distracted by sunshine and garden, so can stay indoors and busy myself with photo shoots for the blog. My current knitting project is making mini bunting for the craft fair at Maenclochog this Sunday. Also need to get on with the dolls ........
Last week-end was Wonderwool Wales at Builth Wells. Not only did I find some wool bargains there but I also had a fab time with the shop girls at a lavender farm at the top of the Brecon hills. So much eating, drinking and squealing.

I have been dyeing with natural plant dyes and have experimented with onion skins, daffodils and dandelion flowers. The yarn will be sold from my Folksy shop and any Guild shows that I attend this summer. This week I am going to try Brazilwood and Madder dyes but it can be difficult to get the right colour from them. Not that it matters - it is all just fun to do.
One method of dyeing is to place the dried flower heads in a pyrex dish, together with cold water, alum and cream of tartar as a mordant and then leave in the greenhouse and let the sunshine do the work.
There is a "Show and Tell" at the Guild meeting this Wednesday but unfortunately I have sold all my knitting, so I will probably take some work in progress, such as Fair Ilse leg warmers, 4ply doll clothes and some yarn I have dyed with onion skins. The other members usually produce some amazing items, so it will be an interesting evening.Jeannie Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16205738251142769022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7822194116577274358.post-37637480397221655422011-03-08T09:00:00.001+00:002011-03-08T09:01:30.498+00:00Shrove Tuesday ...

Time to use up the eggs and make the pancakes. How about casting on 48 stitches and kntting rib or moss for 22 rows. Cast off and add buttons on one of the sides. In front of the buttons make button holes with crochet hook and a chain stitch.
Jeannie Bellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16205738251142769022noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7822194116577274358.post-68661734143419994192011-02-26T18:22:00.000+00:002011-02-26T18:22:25.171+00:00Change of mind!

The vintage shop has started making a profit! As vintage designs go, I don't think that young, yummy mummies, would wish to dress their lovely babies in such outdated designs. Adult vintage knitting designes are something else though. Although the yarn and needles produced for the current times are certainly different in texture and shape, I do feel that today's knitters would turn out a good, wearable garment from these patterns.
